How to Install a Custom Map in FiveM

Custom maps reshape the world your players live in — new islands, reworked districts, race tracks, or detailed map mods that add life to empty corners. Installing them is similar to any streamed resource, with a few extra gotchas.

How map mods work

A map resource streams new or modified world geometry, props and sometimes collisions into the game. Some add brand-new areas; others overhaul existing ones. Closely related are MLO interiors, which handle the insides of buildings.

1. Install as a resource

Drop the map folder into resources and ensure it like any other. Map mods often need to load early, so check the readme for load-order notes.

2. Watch for overlaps

Two map mods editing the same area will fight, causing z-fighting (flickering geometry) or floating props. Run one mod per location and confirm an MLO isn't targeting the same spot.

3. Budget the performance cost

Detailed maps add props and draw calls that cost FPS and streaming memory — the same budget your vehicles use. Manage it with our stream memory guide.

4. Test the world thoroughly

Drive and walk the edited area. Look for missing collision (falling through), holes in the ground, or props with no physics — the map equivalent of our vehicle error checklist.

A reworked map plus a strong vehicle lineup is what makes a server feel like its own place rather than stock GTA.
